Biography

Joanne Thompson was elected the Member of Parliament for St. John’s East in 2021, and has been working every day to make life more affordable, strengthen public health care, and grow the local economy for everyone in her community. She has also recently served as Minister of Seniors.

Born and raised in St. John’s, Joanne is committed to social justice, entrepreneurship, and supporting communities. Her passion for helping others was ignited at a young age when she started volunteering at St. Clare’s Hospital, and it’s that experience that motivated her to enter the healthcare field.

Prior to taking office, Joanne served as the Executive Director of The Gathering Place, a community health centre serving vulnerable populations in downtown St. John’s.

Joanne has always been an active volunteer, with a deep passion for giving back to her community. She put her experience to work on the frontlines of COVID-19 and helped to lead efforts to improve support for seniors and strengthen our public health care system. Joanne has three grown children and lives in St. John’s East with her husband and two dogs Leo and Ebbie.
